Research Topic: Study of blends of biobased and biodegradable Poly(propylene carbonate) and Poly(butylene succinate) by means of reactive extrusion. The analysis of two different functionalization routes for the compounding process: free radical grafting using a peroxide initiator and transterification reactions using a catalyst. The use of ultra high speed extrusion to increase reaction rate and tailor the properties of the compatibilized bioblends.
Research Topic: Siwen Bi is interested in replacing petroleum-based plastics with bio-based and biodegradable polymers with good properties and developing “green” products. She is working on the synthesis of the biodegradable polymer, strategies for modifying the degradability of bio-based polymer and the development of controlled release fertilizer with the biodegradable polymer.
Research Interests: Marine plastics, environmental impacts of marine plastic, re-processing of marine plastics, 3d printing composite materials for aerospace applications
Research Interests: Plastics sustainability, recycling, water sustainability, and public health
